The Philosopher in the Valley. Pour quelqu’un qui prétendait “défendre la démocratie occidentale”…Une phrase du “philosophe” le résume : “People want to know they are safe and safe means that the other person is scared.”

Dream: This person had taken to spewing the lies she was denouncing before, she defended them as vigorously as she had claimed their opposites, I was aboard a train, people were constantly coming to tell me I had to go and recover a little black girl that her “foster mother” didn’t want to keep anymore, but first, I’d have to get off the train that was rolling full speed ahead, how was I to do that ?

No mystery here, the “person” is Alex Karp, Palantir’s CEO whose biography I finished reading yesterday, under the title of The Philosopher in the Valley. Philosopher, my eye. All it takes is to study philosophy to be considered a patented philosopher ? Apparently the Palantir “tool” did wonders during the Covid-19 epidemic. It also does “wonders” in its usages by ICE, and it isn’t clear that the Lavender and Where’s Daddy? programs devised by the Israeli army were devised without Palantir support. Henceforth a billionaire, Alex Karp praises the Donald Trump he used to despise. For someone who claimed he was “defending Western democracy”… One sentence by the “philosopher” summarizes him : “People want to know they are safe and safe means that the other person is scared” “People” Which ones ? The “person”? Which one ?

Trump and Xi Jinping will be meeting today. Which are the “people” and the “persons” who will emerge from that meeting more secure than they were before? Comes a time when there’s no point in thinking of the speed at which the train is rolling when you don’t have access to the cabin in which the conductors are facing off. Every night, Robert Musil would come home from work and carry on with his writing of The Man Without Qualities, that never-equalled portrait of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, precisely.

Reading through some Icelandic sagas for the benefit of “Gilou’s notebook” in L’Horloger des Brumes, I note a detail I had overlooked: Grimr with the Hairy Cheek is the son of Ketill the Salmon. Truly, small world isn’t it ? (in the 12th century, the period of great floweing of sagas in Iceland, the country had a population of 35 000 inhabitants. It is still one of the places in the world where the most books are read every year. Blessed be the Icelanders on their fiery land.)

Sometimes, the publishing happens. Sometimes, it doesn’t. The writing’s the thing that matters the most, as far as I’m concerned.
