Dreams : A dispute over commercial exchanges quickly degenerated into war, with both partie accusing the other of starting it all; then, in that town, tombstones were not concentrated in a cemetery but could be found spread along the streets, I had been sent there to help its community to adapt to contemporary reality it did not understand, sitting at a huge rectangular table, I was gathering information — name, age, profession — from the people sitting in the other chairs, I was at the second one — 46 years old — who was having some trouble explaining the nature of her profession; (but prior to that, I was on the side of a country road with two people, one of which carried a basket — attempting to thumb a ride from the few vehicles using that route and that drove straight by us, the last one taking on a climb up a mountainside where it was raising clouds of dust).

In Gaillac for my medical appointment yesterday, I was curious to see how the chestnut tree who wouldn’t die was doing. As seen above, the leaves now completely cover the trunk, and new shoots are developing along its roots. Clearly, he and his neighbours, the huge sequoias, share an access to water deep down, they don’t seem to have suffered from the summer bouts of heat waves.

This morning, I wake to the cries of the rooster on the other side of the river, with a blocked nose and burning eyes, the return of some allergy or other. Eye drops seriously slow down the speed of fingers on a keyboard…

Today ? I plan to read through my notes concerning L’Horloger des Brumes, and to carry on shaping the stories and presenting the project. And walking also, the physician having insisted on the need to move around, which I didn’t do much during the stifling heat of these last few months.

In the previous days and several times, someone consulted blogposts here from 10 years ago where there was mention of teenagers I accompanied in their acquisition of French. Salim, Ali, Mama, Lassana, Boubacar…what has become of them, I don’t know for the most part. When I last saw Salim who dreamed of becoming a writer, he was signed up in a course to become a car mechanic, had married the young woman who gave him a child and was about to move to another town. I know that another one of them now lives in Paris and has obtained his French citizenship, and that another who was expelled from the country has returned and is keeping a low profile somewhere. From what I’ve heard, returnees are not popular, since they often left carrying the dreams (and the savings) of family, friends and neighbors they were missioned to reimburse once they reached Eldorado…

What else ? A useful bit of advice, one never knows : last Thursday afternoon as Camille and I were discussing, the beastie in the wall went into action. Hitting the wall and yelling insults at it had no effect whatsoever and Camille remembered that one of her friends had broadcast the sound of a barn owl which had chased away the intruder in no time. So I found a recording of a barn owl and placed the computer against the wall and…Mother Maloney, it really deserves it’s French name of chouette effraie Fright Owl. Since then : total silence behind the wall. And with good reason. Personally, if I were some innocent gnawing beastie gnawing away without a care in the world and I happened to hear such a warning, I’d pack my bags and skeedaddle in no time…
