L’illustration n’a rien à voir.

I woke up more than an hour ago. It has taken me all that time to find words following a dream I had last night and that I won’t reproduce here because, bottom line, it was a call for comfort. To generalized comfort, not just my own. Explanation : yesterday on facebook, one whom I will now qualify of former colleague of the webzine les humanités-média chose to republish a blistering, incendiary attack against “the arabs of Gaza”, which is to say the men fanatized by Hamas who perpetrated the ignominies of October 7 2023 on men, women, children, babies because they were “jews”. This publication of his, in response to a film I haven’t seen realized by two young Israelis, on the destruction unleashed on the population in Gaza by the Israeli army in response, a film that apparently received a standing ovation of more than 20 minutes duration, which raises in itself a question of the feelings expressed with so much emotion, a word I should use in the plural here, I think.
I found obscene the use of descriptions of the abject ends imposed on their victims by the fanatized ones as…a “defense”? A “response” ? to this standing ovation. I found it indecent for the victims, and obscene in terms of a call to inextinguishable hatred justifying an endless escalation in the horrors. And since I know that any comment will set off reactions as uncontrolled as that of the knee jerk set off by a small tap by a mallet, my own comments will end here. The last thing I wish to do is to feed into the growing sickness of knee-jerk level of reactions on fundamental issues of good and evil.
Voilà. It took me over an hour to find the words for these two paragraphs.

The ‘illustration has nothing to do with any of that. The image is of very mediocre quality, it was taken during a party where I made a brief appearance last night in the disaffected factory that served as headquarters for Théâtre du Rugissant during more than 10 years, and whose choir carries on while the Theater ends its career, replaced by another band of travelling entertainers whose name I do not know. The book was offered as a gift to Natacha Muet (what an astonishing name for a musician…) and I was leafing through it with Laurent Treneule who painted all the gorgeous elements of the show Ivan the Terrible, some of the images of which appear in this survey of articles done about these companies that criss-cross the country, ever more dependent on the generosity of their publics. And so, final clap also for Steffie Bayer’s magnificent puppets.

With a continuation of the usual program over here, today.
