2 octobre 2026

Un jaune d’or : richesse (…)

Of the dream, there only remains the image of two people saluting one another — and the time to tell myself “basically, that’s what money’s about” — before being awoken by the beastie’s scritch scritch in the wall. Clever beastie, that one : henceforth, it gnaws away for, oh, let’s say …thirty seconds or so. And stops. For hours. Before picking up a bit. And stopping. Not enough time for me to set off the recording of the barn owl. Yesterday, twice, the sound of a light object falling in the kitchen. I have a look. Nothing. Rosa has a bit of a tendency to go sniffing the back wall but that’s all, for the time being no traces of incursions in the open space. The mystery continues.

As for the “basically, that’s what money’s about”: last night, I re-read the final chapter of Adam Tooze’s Crashed written in 2018 about the huge financial melt-down of 2008, followed by the euro meltdown in 2010, followed by …in short, the extremely political character, in others words conventional, nature of what we call “financial value”. Followed by the reading of a recent article in which Tooze gives his opinion on crypto-currency, that attempt at escaping from the rules, precisely. What it all adds up to : I don’t have the foggiest idea, other than the image of a clever, complicated castle made out of playing cards under which the poor get crushed every time it tumbles down and gets rebuilt again by those who can afford to stay in the game. Which reminds me of an American song, The Gambler, the conclusion of which was that the ultimate in good luck for the poker player was to die quietly in his sleep.

This morning I see that someone consulted something I wrote here in July of 2016, titled Gaps, when I sheltered a 17 year old from Mali with whom I never developed the kind of rapport that would have made long lasting friends out of us. I have no regrets in having helped him along in acquiring a civil status and a trade (breadmaker), and I hope all’s well with him, but nothing more.

Gaps. The text in the illustration reads : “I bequeath to my friends/ a ceruleum blue with which to fl /a cobalt blue for happiness/ an ultramarine blue to stimulate the mind / a vermillion to make the blood flow joyfully/(…)A golden yellow : weath (…)A barium yellow : science-fiction, brilliance, glow / ochre yellow to accept the earth (…) an orange to train the eye on a distant lemon tree/ a lemon yellow for grace” wrote Maria Helena Vieira da Silva in her pictural Testament at the end of the 1980s…Born in Libson in 1908, the artist had “taken refuge in the world of colors” at a very early age.
