Cette nuit, les rêves semblaient un tel prolongement de ce que je venais de traduire que je ne veux même pas les noter.

Elle fut très longue, cette traduction du texte de l’historien Timothy Snyder, intitulé Ethnic Cleansing in Ohio ? (Nettoyage ethnique en Ohio ?). Je l’ai publiée, avec l’original, sur la page facebook Maria Damcheva, en suggérant aux lecteurs éventuels de la copier pour pouvoir la lire dans un caractère plus gros. Il y est question de la ville de Springfield, et du fait qu’à moins d’une intervention de dernière minute de la cour, demain, 3 février 2026 à 23h59 minutes, le statut de protection temporaire s’appliquant aux milliers d’haïtiens travaillant dans cette ville sera levée et l’arrivée massive des nervis de ICE est déjà programmée pour le lendemain, 4 février.

Le texte, écrit par un historien américain, natif de cette région et spécialiste de la terreur ( notamment dans l’histoire de l’Ukraine) démonte, mot après mot, la construction d’un mensonge d’état menant à l’élimination d’une population, “justifiée” par la création d’une image la décrivant comme un nuisible menaçant la société et qu’il faut détruire avant qu’il ne soit trop tard. Cette fois-ci, s’inspirant directement de Hitler, le “créateur en chef” de cette fable horrible se nomme JD Vance, vice-président des Etats-Unis, appuyé par l’un des groupes nazis qui vibrionnent sur les réseaux sociaux, les Blood Tribe, création reprise et amplifiée par le président, Donald J. Trump et sa secrétaire au département de la sécurité domestique, Kristi Noem. Dans cette fable, les haïtiens munis de ce statut, rescapés du séisme ayant tué des centaines de milliers de personnes en Haïti, suivi d’un règne de la terreur qui se poursuit aujourd’hui, sont ceux-là même qui ont, à bien des égards, sauvé la ville de Springfield du marasme économique dans lequel elle sombrait. Non seulement n’ont-ils pas contribué à sa “destruction”, au contraire, ils l’en ont tirée. Mais voilà : le bobard lancé par Vance durant la campagne présidentielle, repris par la Blood Tribe sur les réseaux sociaux, et amplifié par Trump lors de son débat télévisé contre la candidate présidentielle Democrat, Kamala Harris, a fait son travail de sape : dans l’imaginaire violemment raciste reposant sur le passé génocidaire et esclavagiste du pays, ces mêmes haïtiens sont dorénavant décrits comme des barbares sous-humains enlevant les animaux de compagnie des habitants pour les dévorer — chiens, chats, voire les canards dans les parcs. Il n’existe pas un seul élément de preuve étayant ces allégations; le tout est une fabrication du début à la fin. Une fabrication voulue, intentionnelle pour mener à ce résultat probable, à moins d’un miracle à la dernière heure : la chasse aux haïtiens dans les rues, les maisons, les lieux de travail et les écoles de la ville de Springfield dans l’état de l’Ohio. Comme l’écrit Timothy Snyder : “Nous ne confrontons pas une analogie historique, mais de véritables nazis du vingt-et-unième siècle agissant dans la sphère publique, façonnant  la conversation publique et obtenant les résultats politiques qu’ils souhaitent. Comme le notait le maire après la manifestation de  Blood Tribe à Springfield, le but en était de  “perturber la communauté »  — et maintenant cette perturbation peut assumer une dimension catastrophique. Blood Tribe, Vance et  Trump ne font pas appel au racisme de quelque d’autre, dans un autre temps ou un autre lieu, mais au racisme américain, ici et maintenant.”

Voilà. Atelier d’écriture cet après-midi. J’avoue n’avoir qu’un appétit très moyen pour cet exercice aujourd’hui, encore plus moyen que d’habitude.

Ah oui : hier, j’ai reçu un message de l’animateur de l’autre atelier d’écriture, celui de la semaine dernière où nous étions trois à écrire à des prisonniers. Il m’apprenait son effarement en découvrant que la poste refusait les lettres adressées aux deux prisonnières américaines auxquelles j’avais écrit. La seule “explication” que j’y trouve, c’est que la présence dans l’envelope d’une seconde envelope timbrée pour un retour éventuel, serait considérée comme faisant de cet objet un “colis” pour lequel les règles tarifaires ont été modifiées par les Etats-Unis au mois d’août dernier ?

Bref, on nage dans une mouise de plus en plus épaisse.

Last night, the dreams felt so much like a continuation of what I had just finished translating, that I don’t even want to jot them down.

It took a long time, that translation of the text by the historian Timothy Snyder, titled Ethnic Cleansing in Ohio ? I published it along with the original on the Maria Damcheva facebook page, suggesting to eventual readers that they copy and print it out in a more easily readable font. It is about the town of Springfield where, barring a last-minute intervention by the courts, tomorrow, February 3 2026 at 11:59pm, the Temporary Protection Status of thousands of Haitians working in that town will be lifted with the arrival of a massive number of ICE goons already scheduled for the next day, February 4th.

The text, written by an American historian, born in that region and a specialist on terror (notably in the history of Ukraine), pulls apart, word after word, the construction of a State lie leading to the elimination of a population, “justified” by the creation of an image describing them like vermin threatening society, that must be destroyed before it’s too late. This time, directly inspired by Hitler, the chief creator of this horrible fable is called JD Vance, vice-president of the United States, supported by one of the nazi groups swarming about on social media, the Blood Tribe, a creation picked up and amplified by the president, Donald J. Trump and his secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. In this fable, the Haitians granted this temporary status allowing them the right to work, saved from the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands in Hait, followed by a reign of teror that is ongoing to this day, have, in many ways, been the salvation of the town ofSpringfield, sinking as it was into an economic morass. Not only did they not contribute to its “destruction”, quite the opposite, they pulled it upward. But there you have it: the lie told by Vance during the presidential campaign, picked up by Blood Tribe on social media and amplified by Trump during his televised debate against the Democrat candidate Kamala Harris did its job: in the violently racist imagination based on a genocidal and slave society, these same Haitians are now described as sub-human barbarians, stealing the residents’s pets to eat them — dogs, cats, even the ducks in the ponds of the parks. There is not one bit of evidence supporting these allegations: the whole thing is a fabrication from start to finish. A willful, intentional fabrication so as to lead to this probable result, unless a last-minute miracle intervenes: the hunting down of Haitians in the streets, the homes, the work places and the school of the town o Springfield in the state of Ohio. As Timothy Snyder writes : “We confront no historical analogy, but actual twenty-first century Nazis who took action in the public sphere, shaped the public conversation, and are getting the policy outcome that they desired. As the mayor noted after Blood Tribe marched in Springfield, the aim was to “disrupt the community” — and now that disruption can take on a catastrophic scale. Blood Tribe, Vance and Trump appeal not to someone else’s racism in some other time and place, but to American racism, right here and now.“

Oh yes: yesterday I received a message from the leader of the other writing workshop, the one held last week where three of us wrote to prisoners. At the Post Office, he was stupefied to learn that the post was refusing the letters addressed to the American prisoners I had written to. The only “explanation” I can find to this is the presence in the envelop of a second, stamped envelop for an eventual response, and that this would be considered as turning the object into a “parcel”, the tariffs fro which have been modified by the States since last August ?

In short, we are swimming through thicker and thicker sludge.
