When life gets too chaotic for my liking, extreme measures apply.

I mentioned the young lady in blue, the other day. There’s also the young woman in white, the young lady in green, the one in red, not to mention the old man in black. All residents of Edward Lear’s Nonsense Limericks. And yes, I’m attempting translations of some of them because I find nonsense on a leash therapeutic.

The leash, in this instance, being the absolute obligation to respect the rhyming pattern. So, when it all gets too much to handle? Let’s see:

There was a young lady in white

Who looked out at the depths of the night;

But the birds of the air

filled her heart with despair

And oppressed that young lady in white.

A first draft attempt in French comes off  thusly:

C’était une jeune femme en blanc

Les abymes de la nuit contemplant

Mais les oiseaux nocturnes

La rendaient taciturne

Oppressant cette jeune femme en blanc.

The young lady in green is proving harder, so I’ll save her for another therapeutic moment. Ah, and the old man in black with a grasshopper on his back. Not to mention the one in a tree, and the…

End of the therapeutic hour, I now move into day mode.

Thérapeutique

Quand la vie devient trop chaotique à mon goût, des mesures extrêmes s’imposent.

L’autre jour, j’ai mentionné la jeune fille en bleu. Il y a aussi la jeune femme en blanc, la jeune fille en vert, celle en rouge, sans parler du vieillard tout en noir. Tous des résidents des Nonsense Limericks d’Edward Lear.   Et, oui, je tente d’en traduire quelques-uns parce que le non-sens mis en laisse, je trouve ça thérapeutique.

Dans ce cas-ci, la laisse consiste à respecter la règle absolue de la versification. Donc, quand tout devient intenable? Voyons, voyons :

There was a young lady in white

Who looked out at the depths of the night;

But the birds of the air

filled her heart with despair

And oppressed that young lady in white.

Une première tentative en français donne ceci :

C’était une jeune femme en blanc

Les abymes de la nuit contemplant

Mais les oiseaux nocturnes

La rendaient taciturne

Oppressant cette jeune femme en blanc.

La jeune fille en vert résiste pour l’instant, je la réserve donc pour un autre moment thérapeutique. Ah, et le vieillard tout en noir. En anglais, il a une sauterelle sur le dos. En français, il aura peut-être la sauterelle en sautoir? Il y a aussi le vieillard juché dans son arbre, et le…
