Dreams: I was translating extremely complex sentences from English into French and, every so often, I got sick of it and left everything standing, half-translated, then I’d get back to it, and so on; prior to that, I had taken the decision to go establish myself in Israel, even though I was well aware that my presence there would be totally irrelevant.

Two threads, as pertains to translation: the first, concerning Canadian linguistic rules and what about them is unacceptable in the agreement the United States wished to impose on its main commercial partner. I haven’t seen the document, but I supposed that the existence of French as an official language along with English displeases the fine gentlemen since it “imposes additional expenses” on the information they must provide to consumers of their products ? Plus, what use would there be of French in Mister Trump’s fifty-first states, yes ? (No matter what my opinions may be concerning the condition of the French language in Canada, linguistic matters are not of the domain of a negotiation on trade, having to do with the realities of languages in their wanderings, be they French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabaic or any other).

The second thread involves the reading I did yesterday of the old French version in a version from the 12th century of La Folie Tristan; what I found facsinating was the number of words in old French that are now part of the English language, often with the very same spelling. Periods follow upon one another, without necessarily being similar.

As for Israel : settling there, in dreamtime only, clearly. Even in the dream, it was like coming across a shard of a forgotten self.

As for working in fits and starts…well, that’s a fact.

Well, at some point in The Crisis of Social-Democracy, prior to being shot in the head with her body dumped into a canal on January 15 1918, Rosa Luxemburg wrote somewhere “But we are not lost and we shall overcome if we have not forgotten how to lean”. Which is precisely my concern about all the automated systems offering in such an eager manner to do your thinking for you, against a modest monthly fee. Meanwhile, power outages are multiplying in the United States of America and two days ago, hecklers shouted down Trump to cries of “traitor!” in Mytrtle Beach South Carolina, of all places. The whole mess is definitely going to get worse before it gets any better…if we don’t unlearn too much how to learn, that is.
