The dream (it felt endless): In their apprenticeship of democracy and neutrality, the Helvetians had to face repeated attacks by dogs throwing themselves against their arms, solidly encased in fabric, the whole giving off the feeling of never ever ending and when I opened my eyes, the first image that came back to me was that of a stroll through the streets of Geneva, of the unbelievable luxury displayed in the storefront windows and, as I was heading back to my hotel, walking along the edge of the park by the lake, the rat, enormous, exploring the garbage behind a “luxury” restaurant. It was moving slowly, like a well fed guest carefully choosing what he would eat today, among the daily specials on offer in his favorite restaurant. Huge, he was.
Over here, the gnawer in the wall only made a brief sound appearance last night, with a scritch scritch I would qualify as cautious, exploratory. I set off the recording of the barn owl. Followed by total radio silence, the gnawing one must have told itself the equivalent of “damn, still there…” (I’m hoping that, eventually it will tell itself it might be better to go scritch scritch somewhere else.) And because I’m deep into the “notebook with a clasp” also called “Gilou’s notebook” whose comments appear between the tales of the other characters in L’Horloger des Brumes, two children’s ditties came back to me. In French, the one about strolling through the woods while the wolf is away, if the wolf was there he would eat us, wolf are you there ? (and in a gruff voice, the adult answers, saying where the wolf is in terms of getting dressed before pouncing to the delighted screams of the kiddies), and in English “t’was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was peeping, not even a mouse.”
I took a walk yesterday, along a path I didn’t know; it runs along the other side of the river and seems well trodden by people heading toward the upper town and its shops (that is…the ones still to be found there, most have moved out to the edge of town now and can only be reached if you own a car). Came home through the park on my street. Approximately a half-hour, as recommended by the doctor. I see many women walking in pairs, chatting away. I wouldn’t like that at all. “Just me and my thoughts”, and my eyes to take in the condition of what’s around me. In the park, during the heat waves, the fig trees, the quince and pomegranate trees all dropped most of their fruit before they matured and only held on to a few, much smaller than usual.
Geneva. T when does this prosperous neutrality date back, so useful for unlawful financing? Is business still as thriving now, in the days of “offshores” and crypto-laundering ? Does one still find there the wonderful second-hand bookstore where I came across my Mirgorod by Gogol ? Or have Anthropic & Co bought up all the second hand books to chop them up, scan them into their AIs and pulp the remains ?
