“Premature birth and prolonged dependency are the dominant factors in human psychology.”
This sentence by Christopher Lasch, quoted by Anselm Jappe in La Société autophage (The Autophagic Society) is perhaps the best summation of the astonishing passivity that befalls humans when faced with “forces” or “powers” that dominate them so easily. As if this long infantile sequence of powerlessness provided the basic shelter when things are “too demanding”. With every variation imaginable, whether possible or not, when comes the time to explain said impossbility.
