First thought upon waking up: no matter what the scale, fractals repeat the same shapes.
In the dream, there was an event of world-wide scale to be realized for which a famous Québécois film maker was considered who spent months being convinced before signing the contract with Hollywood, the show took place on a gigantic stage, it was during an interlude where three famous singers were crossing the stage in lockstep, they were filmed from a bird’s eye view from such a distance that they looked like three small dark shadows moving against a gigantic and glaringly bright backdrop, myself, I had stayed to set out the wash to dry from the top of dizzyingly high tower with a constant fear of falling into the void while I set wet nightgowns to dry on the bars of the tower.
Fractals, yes. From the buddy called in to the gendarmerie because the local leader of the extreme-right has lodged a complaint against her, accusing her “violating a private space” (a meeting hall), of insults and threats (she would have called him a fascist and an asshole. “Fascist” refers to an ideology, if he considers it an insult, that’s all to his honor, I don’t recall telling him he’s an asshole, but sometimes the word pops out on its own, she answered.) For his part, the plaintiff describes her as an extremist and possibly a terrorist; in any even, the gendarme seemed mostly annoyed to have to deal with this trifle, since he had many other “fish to fry” as he told her himself.
fractals, while Israeli soldiers were ordered by their commander to drive leaders of the extreme-right to a march organized on the border with Gaza to demand the re-installation of Jewish settlers in Gaza, to replace those that were expelled in 2005 (and who served as images for the promotion of the march. “We must act now”, they were told by ministers of the Netanyahu coalition, “because if the left wins the elections, we’ll have to start all over again”. Men and women rushing over with their children to demande the handing over of “their” lands, in the name of religious texts dating back I don’t know how many centuries and may reality be damned and poisoned forever
while and while and while in the United States, in Russia, in Ukraine, in China, in India, in Pakistan, in Afghanistan, in every world center and periphery, the same scenario plays out in the noise and the furore and a media coverage I would describe as doubly reactionary — because it reacts in the split of a second to the slightest sway caused by a “big name” while ignoring all the rest, and reactionary because it is locked into attitudes of phoney neutrality labelled as objectivity. And because, as historian Timothy Snyder says, “the most important is the hardest to see”. Very true but, meanwhile, the superficial keeps on submerging it.
I wish I had an on-off switch I could activate in my brain on where I put my attention, same as I turn off the signals from the phone while I’m writing. “Lack of discipline”, and all that. Buckle down, woman !
Illustration : in front of my window this morning : my landlord came this way to buy some hay ? Has everything roasted closer to where he lives ?(After a conversation at the window with him: part of the winter supply for their two circus horses, the hay being less expensive over here — on average, 18€ per bale, whereas where they live, prices vary between… 35 and 50€ per bale…)
