Franchement – mise à part l’échauffourée occasionnelle, la vie du chat domestique en Occident n’a rien de trop stressant ou trépidant. En fait, en Occident, le chat domestique passe le plus clair de son temps à dormir. Quelques bâillements, quelques étirements, une attention momentanée à un papillon et hop, c’est l’heure d’un autre petit roupillon. C’est… un spectacle étonnant.

Evidemment, la situation dont il est question dans mon cahier collages-écrits n’a rien à voir avec celle qui a inspiré à Anna Akhmatova son Élégie #6. Il n’empêche qu’il s’y trouve des concordances, notamment, dans les mots suivants:

“...Nous devinons que notre vie présente ne peut plus accueillir notre passé…Et ceux dont Dieu aura voulu qu’ils vivent sans nous revoir ont fait leur vie...”

Je n’y rajoute pas les tout derniers mots : “…et tout est pour le mieux,” car, vraiment, quand “le mieux”, c’est une tache indélébile d’amertume, on s’en accommode, bien sûr, et on chante Gracias a la vida avec Violeta Parra, bien sûr; il n’en demeure pas moins que ce que la vie a “de mieux” à nous offrir a souvent un goût d’une amertume affirmée. Il paraît que l’amer est bon pour le foie. Prenons-le donc sous cet angle.

Hier soir, j’ai fait une transcription anglaise de la traduction française d’une certaine Natalia Kochubey sur Facebook d’un article du journaliste ukrainien Vitaly Portnikov. Voici sa traduction :

« Il ne se calmera pas. »

Selon le dernier sondage d’opinion publique CNN/SSRS, la plupart des Américains pensent que leur pays a déjà fait assez pour soutenir l’Ukraine et qu’aucun financement supplémentaire n’est nécessaire. Oui, le rapport entre ceux qui pensent qu’on en a fait assez et ceux qui sont sûrs que nous devons continuer à aider n’est pas critique – 55 % contre 48 %. Mais la tendance, comme on dit, est évidente. D’ailleurs, les partisans de l’arrêt du financement prédominent dans l’électorat républicain, ils sont 71 % d’entre eux.

On l’a dit dès les premiers jours de la guerre que la situation allait évoluer dans ce sens. Si le conflit s’éternise, la « lassitude » de la guerre apparaîtra inévitablement hors des frontières de l’Ukraine, de nouvelles guerres éclateront, la situation paraîtra de plus en plus menaçante et la « voix du bon sens » s’élèvera au-dessus des autres : la guerre doit être arrêtée avant qu’il ne soit trop tard. Jusqu’à présent, cette voix a prévalu dans le soi-disant « Sud global ». Nous entendons des appels à un cessez-le-feu immédiat de Pékin et d’Ankara. Mais je n’exclus pas du tout que des appels similaires apparaissent bientôt en Occident, et Trump, encore plus, peut commencer à dénoncer Biden comme belliciste et en faire un sujet important de sa campagne électorale.

Cependant, une chose est surprenante : pourquoi les appels à la fin de la guerre sont-ils adressés principalement à l’Ukraine, et non à la Russie ? Est-ce l’Ukraine qui a attaqué la Russie, et non l’inverse ? Est-ce l’Ukraine qui a occupé et annexé les territoires russes ? Est-ce l’Ukraine qui détruit les ports, les aérodromes et les centrales électriques russes ? Est-ce l’Ukraine qui se considère en droit de dire à la Russie à quelles alliances elle doit adhérer ? Est-ce l’Ukraine qui fait peur à la Russie avec des armes nucléaires ?

Non, cette guerre a été déclenchée et peut être arrêtée par un seul État – la Fédération de Russie de Vladimir Poutine qui est un Etat terroriste, un Etat maître chanteur, un Etat gangster, un État tueur, un État menteur. Et si le monde ne peut pas forcer l’agresseur à arrêter la guerre et se défoule sur la victime, alors honte à un tel monde.

Bien sûr, on peut réduire son assistance à l’Ukraine et commencer à lui tordre les bras. Oui, cette administration américaine ne le fera peut-être pas, mais qui a dit que la suivante ne le ferait pas ? Mais quel en sera l’effet ? Des négociations pour mettre fin à la guerre ? Non, Poutine s’en fout de ces négociations. Son objectif est la destruction et l’anéantissement de l’Ukraine, et c’est exactement ce qu’il essaie de réaliser.

Si l’aide à l’Ukraine diminue, Poutine ne sera pas intéressé par des négociations, mais par une nouvelle offensive. Ensuite, il y aura une nouvelle Bucha. Nouvelle Borodyanka. Nouvelle Izum. Alors, on se souviendra de la guerre et on augmentera de nouveau le soutien …

Je ne comprends pas une chose – pourquoi les Ukrainiens devraient-ils payer de leur vie la réticence des politiciens occidentaux à comprendre ce qu’est Poutine, par peur de la Russie ? En Occident – je ne parle même pas du “Sud global” – il y a toujours une opinion selon laquelle Poutine est sur le point de reprendre ses esprits, de se ressaisir, d’être prêt pour les négociations, qu’il a juste besoin d’aide pour sortir de la situation et sauver la face.

Pendant ce temps, Poutine lui-même est sûr que tout va très bien avec sa face, et vous ne pouvez pas imaginer une situation qui soit meilleure pour lui – il est en guerre ! Alors que les politiciens occidentaux sont frustrés par le rythme de la contre-offensive ukrainienne, Poutine rapproche les wagnériens de la frontière polonaise et crée toutes les conditions pour une nouvelle guerre hybride. Alors que les politiciens du “Sud global” tentent d’amener Poutine et Zelensky à la table des négociations, le président russe lui-même crée les conditions pour une hausse des prix alimentaires et pour la faim dans les pays de ses “partenaires historiques”.

Poutine a de grandes – et terribles – intentions. Il n’a pas de valeurs ni de style de vie à proposer en tant que modèle, comme le font les Américains. Il n’a pas d’argent pour les investissements au même niveau que les Chinois proposent. D’autre part, il a l’intention de déstabiliser à la fois l’Occident et le “Sud global”, car ce n’est que dans le chaos qu’il peut se sentir comme le Président d’une “grande puissance”.

Il est naïf de penser que Poutine peut se contenter d’un morceau sanglant de l’Ukraine – et qu’il se calmera ensuite. Il est naïf de penser que l’Ukraine peut lui être donnée – et il se calmera. Il serait naïf de penser que toute l’ancienne Union soviétique pourrait lui être donnée et qu’il se calmera. Il serait naïf de penser qu’il se calmera après avoir reçu la traditionnelle sphère d’influence soviétique en Europe. Son appétit ne fera que croître. Il ne se reposera pas tant qu’il n’aura pas détruit tout ce qui l’entoure – simplement parce qu’il ne sait rien faire d’autre et que la philosophie de l’État russe ne présuppose tout simplement rien d’autre. Il ne peut pas être calmé. Il ne peut qu’être arrêté.

Peut-être, lorsque les Américains, qui croient que leur pays a fait tout son possible pour l’Ukraine, seront convaincus des véritables intentions de Poutine, il sera peut-être trop tard. Mais, comme le montre l’expérience ukrainienne, une prise de conscience tardive de la réalité n’annule pas cette réalité elle-même. Par conséquent, il vaut mieux voir le danger avant qu’il ne devienne impossible d’y faire face.”

Frankly – apart from the occasional scuffle, the life of the domestic cat in the West has nothing too stressful or hectic about it. In fact, in the West, the domestic cat spends most of its time sleeping. A few yawns, a few stretches, momentary attention to a butterfly and off we go, it’s time for another little snooze. It’s an astonishing spectacle.

Of course, the situation I’m working on in the notebook of collages and writings has nothing to do with the one that inspired Anna Akhmatova to write her Elegy #6. Nonetheless, there are correspondences, notably in the following words : “...we sense that our current existence can no longer accommodate our past…And those whom God has willed that they should live on without seeing us again have made their way…”

I don’t add the final words “…and all is for the best“, because, truly, when “the best” is an indelible stain of bitterness, we put up with it, of course, and of course we sing Gracias a la vida along with Violeta Parra but this changes nothing to the fact that “the best” life has to offer often has a strong taste of bitters. They say bitterness is good for the liver. So let’s take it under that angle.

Last night, I transcribed into English the French translation one Natalia Kochubey had done on Facebook of an article by the Ukrainian journalist Vitaly Portnikov. The following is my transcription :

« He won’t calm down »

According to the latest public opinion polls by CNN/SSRS, most Americans think that their country has already done enough in support for Ukraine and that no additional financing is necessary. Yes, the spread between those who consider they’ve done enough and those who are sure they must keep on aiding is not critical – 55% against 48%. But, as they say, the tendency is obvious. Besides, those in favour of ending the financial support predominate in the Republican electorate, where they represent 71%. 

Since the very first days of the war, it was known that the situation would evolve in this direction. If the conflict dragged on, « war fatigue »  would inevitably show up outside Ukrainian borders, new wars would break out, the situation would constantly  become  more threatening and the « voice of common sense » would rise above all the others: the war must be stopped before it is too late. Up until now, this voice has prevailed in the so-called « global South ». We hear calls for an immediate cease-fire from Peking and Ankara. But I do not at all exclude the possibility that similar appeals will soon appear in the West and Trump, more than ever can begin denouncing Biden as a warmonger and turn this into an important element in his electoral campaign.

However, one thing is surprising: why are these appeals to end the war mainly aimed at Ukraine and not at Russia ? Did Ukraine attack Russia, or was it not the opposite ? Did Ukraine occupy and annex Russian territories ? Is Ukraine the one destroying Russian harbours, airfields and power stations ? Is Ukraine the one who considers itself entitled to tell Russia what alliances it may join ? Is Ukraine the one frightening Russia with threats of nuclear weapons?

No, this war was launched, and can be stopped, by only one State – Vladimir Putin’s Russian Federation which is a terrorist State, a blackmailing State, a gangster State, a killer State, a lying State. And if the world cannot force the aggressor to stop the war, and takes it out on the victim, then, shame on such a world.

Of course, one can reduce the aid to Ukraine and start twisting its arm.  Yes, this American government will probably not do so, but who says the next one won’t ? But with what result ? Negotiations to end the war ? No, Putin doesn’t give a damn about negotiations. His aim is the destruction and annihilation of Ukraine, and that is precisely what he is attempting to achieve. If aid to Ukraine is reduced, Putin won’t be interested in negotiations, but in a new offensive. The, there will be a new Bucha. A new Borodyanka. A new Izum. Then, we will remember there is a war, and increase the aid once again…There is one thing I do not understand – why should Ukrainian have to pay with their lives the reticence of Western politicians to understand what Putin is, out of fear of Russia ? In the West – I’m not even mentioning the « global South » – there is always an opinion according to which Putin is on the verge of regaining his mind, of getting a hold on himself, of being ready to negotiate, that he just needs a bit of help to get out of the situation and save face. 

Meanwhile, Putin himself is sure everything is just fine with his face, and you cannot imagine a better situation for him – he is at war ! While Western politicians are frustrated by the rhythm of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, Putin moves the Wagnerians closer to the Polish border and sets up all the required conditions for a new hybrid war. While the politicians in the « global South » attempt to bring Putin and Zelensky to the negotiation table, the Russian President himself creates conditions for an increase in food prices and for hunger in the countries of his « historical partners ».   

Putin has great – and terrible – intentions.  He has no values or lifestyle to offer up as a model, as the Americans do. He does not have money for investments at the same level as the Chinese can. On the other hand, he intends to de-stabilize both the West and the « global South », because it is only in chaos that he can feel himself to be the President of a « great power ».  

It is naive to think that Putin could be satisfied with a bleeding piece of Ukraine – and that he will then calm down. It is naive to think that Ukraine can be given to him – and that he will then calm down. It is naive to think that all of the old Soviet Union can be handed over to him, and that he will then calm down.  It would be naive to think  that he will calm down after receiving the traditional Soviet sphere of influence in Europe. His appetite will only increase.  He will not rest until he has destroyed everything around him – simply because he doesn’t know how to do anything else and that the philosophy of the Russian State simply does not presuppose anything else. He cannot be calmed down. He can only be stopped.   

Perhaps, once the American who believe that their country has done everything possible for Ukraine, will be convinced of Putin’s true intentions, it will be too late.  But, as the Ukrainian experience demonstrates, a late realization of reality does not cancel out the reality itself. Consequently, it is better to see the danger before it becomes impossible to face up to it. “
