D’un roi qui s’autodévora –

L’Europe a besoin d’éthanol (pour la “révolution verte”, n’est-ce pas…) Alors Bolsonaro décrète l’Amazonie ouverte à l’industrie sucrière pour produire beaucoup beaucoup beaucoup d’éthanol.

D’où cette histoire d’un roi qui s’autodévora (après avoir consommé tout le reste autour de lui), tirée du prologue  à la société autophage d’Anselme Jappe* :

“…Erysichthon était le fils de Triopas, devenu roi de Thessalie après en avoir chassé les habitant autochtones…Ces derniers avaient consacré un bois magnifique à Déméter, la déesse des moissons. En son centre s’élevait un arbre gigantesque et les dryades, les nymphes des forêts, dansaient à l’ombre de ses branches. Erysichthon, désireux d’en faire des planchers pour la construction de son palais, s’y rendit un jour avec des serfs armés de haches et commença à l’abattre. Déméter elle-même lui apparut alors… pour l’inviter à renoncer. Erysichthon lui répondit avec mépris, mais les serfs prirent peur et voulurent éviter le sacrilège. Leur maître saisit alors une cognée et trancha net la tête de l’un d’eux. Il abattit ensuite l’arbre, malgré le sang qui s’en écoulait et une voix qui en sortait pour lui annoncer un châtiment.

Celui-ci ne se fit pas attendre : Déméter lui envoya la Faim personnifiée qui pénétra, à travers le souffle, dans le corps du coupable.Ce dernier fut alors saisi d’une fringale que rien ne pourrait plus apaiser : plus il mangeait, plus il avait faim… Il consomma, comme un feu qui tout dévore, ce qui aurait suffi à nourrir une ville, un peuple entier…lorsque la violence de son mal eut épuisé tous les aliments…il déchira lui-même ses propres membres, se mit à les arracher…et le malheureux se nourrit de son corps en le mutilant.”

Concerning a king who self-devoured –

Europe needs ethanol (for the Green Revolution, don’t you know…) So Bolsonaro decrees that the Amazon is open to the sugar industry for the production of lots and lots and lots of ethanol.

Which prompts this story about a king who self-devoured (after eating everything else around him), taken from the prologue to Anselme Jappe’s la société autophage*:

“…Erysichthon was the son of Triopas, and he became king of Thessaly after chasing away all of its local inhabitants…They had dedicated a magnificent woodland to Demeter, the goddess of harvests. At its center stood a huge tree where dryads and wood nymphs danced in the shade of its branches.  Wanting to use it as planks for the flooring in his palace, Erysichthon went there one day with serfs carrying axes and started to cut it down. Demeter then appeared in person…to invite him to give up this plan.  Erysichthon answered her with contempt, but the serfs were frightened and wanted to avoid the sacrilege. Their master grabbed one of the tools and hacked off the head of one of the serfs. Then he chopped down the tree despite the blood running out of it and the voice from within the tree announcing a punishment.

It was not long in appearing: Demeter sent him Hunger personified that entered the guilty one’s body through his breath. He was seized by a craving nothing could satisfy: the more he ate, the hungrier he became…Like a raging fire, he consumed what would have sufficed to feed a town, an entire people…once the violence of his craving had used up every food stuff…he tore at his own limbs, started tearing them off…and by mutilating himself, the miserable one fed off his own body.”
