Matière à réflexion –

Ma copie personnelle de L’écriture ou la vie de Jorge Semprun fait partie des livres que je ne prête à personne, tant ale est truffée de passages soulignés et de commentaires personnels dans les marges. Par exemple à la page 126 lorsqu’il dispose de la “ruse assez primitive, assez arrogante aussi” de Heidegger lequel prétend que les seules langues philosophiques concevables sont l’allemand…et le grec classique. Quelle sorte de pensée universelle peut en jaillir si elle ne peut s’articuler que dans une seule langue vivante et une langue morte, demande Semprun. En effet.

Mais ce qui retient mon attention aujourd’hui – alors que je poursuis ma lecture de Mr. Putin de Fiona Hill et Clifford G. Gaddy*, entrecoupée de revue des dernières stupidités éructées par les dirigeants des mondes plus ou moins libres, c’est ce qui suit et dont je commence à pleinement apprécier la profondeur, quelque 25 ans après une première lecture :

“…la conception très forte…d’une assise originaire où s’enracine la liberté humaine, capable de produire le Bien et le Mal, ontologique ment équivalents…D’où l’impossibilité de décréter l’inhumanité du Mal…à Buchenwald, les S.S., les Kapo, les mouchards, les tortionnaires sadiques faisaient tout autant partie de l’espèce humaine que les meilleurs, les plus purs d’entre nous, d’entre les victimes… La frontière du Mal n’est pas celle de l’inhumain, c’est tout autre chose. D’où la nécessité d’une éthique qui transcende ce fonds originaire où s’enracine autant la liberté du Bien que celle du Mal…Une éthique, donc, qui se dégage à jamais des théodicées et des théologies, puisque Dieu, par définition, les thomistes l’ont assez proclamé, est innocent du Mal. Une éthique de la Loi et de sa transcendance, des conditions de sa domination, donc de la violence qui lui est justement nécessaire…”**

Il suffit de lire suivre les informations pour s’en rendre compte qu’il est plus que temps d’y réléchir sérieusement.

Food for thought –

My personal copy of Jorge Semprun’s L’écriture ou la vie (published in English under the title Literature or Life) is one among the books I lend to no one, so filled is it with underlined portions and personal comments in the margins. Such as my appreciation on page 126 of the way he disposes of Heidegger’s “primitive ruse, and arrogant also…” Heidegger claims that German -and Classical Greek – as the only two conceivable philosophical languages. What kind of universal thought can spring forth if it can only be articulated in one living language and one dead one, Semprun asks. Indeed.

But what holds my attention today – as I pursue my reading of  Mr. Putin by Fiona Hill et Clifford G. Gaddy*,  interspaced with reviews of the latest stupidities eructated by the leaders of the more or less free worlds, is what follows and the profundity of which I am only beginning to fully appreciate, some 25 years after a first reading:

…the very strong concept…of an original grounding in which is rooted human freedom, capable of producing Good and Evil, as ontological equivalents…From which flows the impossibility of decreeing the inhumanity of Evil… In Buchenwald, the S.S., the Kapo, the informers, the sadistic torturers were as much part of the human race as were the best, the purest among us, among the victims… The frontier of Evil is not that of inhumanity, it is something else entirely. From which arises the need for an ethic that transcends this initial grounding in which are rooted the freedom of the Good as well as that of the freedom of Evil…An ethic, therefore, forever removed from the theodicies and theologies since, God, by definition as the Thomists have sufficiently proclaimed, is innocent of Evil. An ethic of Law and of its transcendance, of the conditions for its domination, and therefore of the violence that is fittingly necessary to it… (personal translation from the French)**
