Abstractions –

Comme je n’ai fait aucune études universitaires en linguistique ou en philosophie, je ne saurais dire si les professionnels de la pensée estiment que l’humain a découvert la notion de l’abstraction en même temps qu’il développait un langage, ou si l’abstraction d’un mot désignant une chose concrète l’a frappé en plein front dès sa première utilisation.

Chose certaine, le merveilleux monde de la pensée a poursuivi son petit bonhomme de chemin à travers les âges jusqu’à la célébrissime trouvaille de la Raison d’Etat (notez les majuscules, grande trouvaille aussi).

Evidemment, la Raison d’Etat étant une abstraction, elle ne peut s’exercer qu’à travers des humains et leurs créations. Et par le plus curieux des hasards, la Raison d’Etat, toute abstraite qu’elle soit, colle admirablement aux intérêts des humains qui en déterminent l’application, comme j’ai pu le remarquer encore une fois l’autre jour, alors que je traduisais les mots d’un homme servant de tels intérêts,  mû – personne n’en doute – par sa dévotion totale au pouvoir de l’abstraction et pas du tout à celle de “la voix de son Maître”.

(Il n’empêche,  comme j’ai pu le constater hier au festival de rues, la Raison d’Etat est une copie conforme  du comportement du plus fort de deux petits de 1 an, tapant l’autre sur la tête avec son jouet. Et ça n’avait rien du tout d’abstrait, je vous prie de me croire.)

L’illustration du jour étant plutôt une célébration du pouvoir de l’abstraction au service de la création, les œuvres de Steffie Bayer faisant partie de celles qui s’exposent à travers la ville jusqu’au 21 juillet. Celles-ci se trouvent rue St-Jean.  Qu’on se le dise.

As I have no university training in linguistics or in philosophy, I can’t say if professionals of thought consider that humans discovered the notion of abstraction at the same time as they developped a language, or if the abstraction of a word designating a concrete object hit them smack in the forehead on its very first utilization.

What is certain: the marvelous world of thought went its happy way throughout the ages until the celebrititious discovery of Reason of State (note the upper caps, also a great discovery).

Of course, Reason of State being an abstraction, it can only be exercised through human agency and that of human creations. And by the oddest of coincidences, Reason of State, no matter how abstract,  has a way of matching up admirably with the interests of those humans deciding on its application, as I noticed  once again the other day while translating the words of a man serving such interests, out of his utter dedication to the powers of abstraction – and not to that of the power of “his Master’s voice” –  it goes without saying.

(Notwithstanding the fact, as I happened to notice yesterday at the street fair, abstract Reason of State is a carbon copy of the behavior of the stronger of two 1 year-olds bonking the other over the head with a toy. And there was nothing abstract about it, believe me.)
