L’homme qui a vu l’homme qui a vu l’ours –

Je suis en train de traduire en français un texte à partir de …sa traduction en anglais. Comme je ne comprends pas le turc, je ne peux pas me référer à l’original de la défense qu’opposait l’écrivain Ahmet Altan à ses accusateurs le  20 juin    dernier, dans le procès à Istanbul où lui et son frère Mehmet risquent tous deux une triple peine d’emprisonnement à vie pour “putschisme”. Dix-sept autres personnes sont aussi accusées et risquent la prison à perpétuité.

Comme l’explique Ahmet Altan, l’accusation repose essentiellement sur le “crime” suivant: “On prétend que nous connaissons  les hommes présumés connaître les hommes présumés avoir dirigés le coup d’état.”

D’où le titre d’aujourd’hui.

Le texte d’Autan mérite d’être lu, ne serait-ce que pour bien comprendre les dérives du pouvoir lorsqu’il ne respecte pas les libertés fondamentales – et à quel point pareilles dérives peuvent dévoyer rapidement l’exercice du droit.

Une fois que ma traduction aura été lue et approuvée, je la publierai ici. N’y aurait-il qu’un seule autre personne pour la lire et pour apprécier la signification des mots courage et probité professionnelle, j’estimerai avoir bien employé mon temps.

The man who saw the man who saw the bear

I’m translating a text into French from its… English translation.  As I don’t understand Turkish, I cannot refer back to the original of the defence writer Ahmet Altan presented to his accusers in Istanbul on June 20th  during the trial in which both he and his brother Mehmet are at risk of a triple life sentence for  “putschism”. Seventeen others are also on trial and at risk of a life sentence.

As Ahmet Altan explains, the accusation rests essentially on the following “crime”: ” We are said to know the men who allegedly know the men who are alleged to have directed the coup.”

Hence the title of today’s post.

Altan’s text desserves a read, if only to fully understand the abuses of power when it does not respect fondamental liberties – and how quickly such abuses can corrupt the practice of law.

Once my translation will have been read and approved, I will publish it here. Should there be only one other person who reads it and appreciates the meaning of the words courage and professional integrity, I’ll consider my time well spent.
