Au jeu de la surenchère, l’avantage est au plus menteur. Et comme l’art du mensonge s’affine avec les années de pratique…

Dans quelques minutes, j’éteindrai l’ordinateur et je sortirai vaquer aux autres tâches du quotidien: payer le loyer, notamment. Marcher aussi, pour libérer un peu d’espace dans la tête, espace essentiel aux personnages d’un roman en phase d’écriture qui peinent à se faire entendre dans l’hystérie électorale ambiante. Et j’écris ceci avant le Grand Oral télévisé de ce soir, où les deux candidats à l’Elysée vont s’affronter dans la version contemporaine de l’ordalie ou du “mud wrestling”, choisissez l’image qui vous parle le plus. (Le “mud wrestling” étant une variante du catch dans laquelle les candidats -mais de préférence des candidates – s’affrontent dans une fosse remplie de boue bien molle.)

Est-il inutile de rappeler qu’après le dimanche 7 mai, le calendrier prévoit la possibilité d’un 8 mai, suivi d’un 9, et ainsi de suite?  Que la déferlante de boue est loin d’être terminée et qu’il serait bon de se réserver un peu d’énergie pour les lendemains difficiles? Puisqu’ils le seront, c’est la seule assurance que nous ayions.

Chose certaine, plusieurs de mes personnages tendent à le démontrer: L’hystérie est mauvaise conseillère. Elle a tendance à privilégier le pire au détriment du nécessaire.

In a few minutes, I’ll shut down the computer and go out to take care of other tasks: paying the rent, among them. I’ll go walking also, in order to free up some space in my head, essential space for characters in an in-progress novel; they are having a hard time of it in the thick of the current electoral hysteria. And I’m writing this before tonight’s televised Big Oral Exam where the two presidential candidates will face off in a contemporary version of the trial by fire or of mud wrestling – choose the image you find most appropriate.

Is it a useless reminder to mention that, after Sunday May 7th, the calendar shows a possible May 8th, followed by a 9nth, and so on? That the mudslide is far from over and that it might be smart to save some energy for difficult tomorrows? Because they will be difficult, that’s the only guarantee we have.

One thing is certain, several of my fictional characters tend to demonstrate it: hysteria is a poor counsellor. It tends to favor the worst to the detriment of the necessary.
