When the deaf phonetician spread his hand

Over the dome of a speaker’s skull

He could tell which diphthong and which vowel

Non, je ne tenterai pas de traduire.

Depuis hier, je lis et je relis en traduction française et en anglais, un texte d’Hannah Arendt sur Walter Benjamin, publié dans le New Yorker en 1968. Comme une abeille cherchant son miel, je tourne autour de la phrase suivante: “L’intérêt de Benjamin allait à l’affinité qu’il pouvait percevoir entre une scène dans la rue, une spéculation en bourse, un poème, une pensée ; au fil caché qui les reliait et permettait à l’historien ou  au philologue de reconnaître qu’il fallait les rattacher à la même période.” *

Personnellement, je laisse à l’historien ou au philologue leur boulot. C’est le fil caché qui retient mon attention. Et le bourdonnement de l’os qui vibre au son spécifique des diphtongues et des voyelles, perçu par le phonéticien sourd que Heaney mentionne dans son poème.

Since yesterday, I’ve been reading and re-reading in English and in French translation a text by Hannah Arendt on Walter Benjamin, published in the New Yorker in 1968. Like a bee searching for her honey, I circle around the following sentence: “He was concerned with the correlation between a street scene, a speculation on the stock exchange, a poem, a thought, with the hidden line which holds them together and enables the historian or philologist to recognize that they must all be placed in the same period.” **

Personally, I leave the historian and the philologist to their work. It’s the hidden line that holds my attention. And the hum from the vibrating bone, corresponding to each sound, detected by the deaf phonetician Heaney mentions in his poem.
